CAPTAIN & CREW

Captain Cyrus grew up fishing the rich waters off the Kona coast, where his love for the ocean began with chasing Giant Trevally as a young boy. By his early 20s, that passion had evolved into an obsession with catching yellowfin tuna. To master this craft, Cyrus became a live-bait specialist, spending thousands of hours perfecting his techniques. At just 20 years old, he built his first skiff and dedicated himself to the pursuit of tuna, hoping to end each day with a full cooler for the market.

By 25, Captain Cyrus purchased his first charter boat, the Ahi Lani. A 34’ Hatteras Express, powered by old 653 Detroit engines, the Ahi Lani was as loud as a Harley-Davidson and as slow as a snail. Despite its shortcomings, Cyrus made up for it with unrelenting persistence. It was aboard the Ahi Lani that Captain Cyrus discovered his passion for hunting blue marlin.

Marlin fishing is unlike any other form of fishing—more akin to hunting than angling. Success demands an intimate knowledge of the ocean, from moon phases and currents to bathymetry and bait selection. Those early years were a trial by fire for Captain Cyrus, spent with the constant drone of engines in his ears and a pair of Fujinon binoculars fixed to his eyes, scanning the horizon for signs of life.

Captain Cyrus’ second boat, the Honey, marked a significant upgrade. This 38-foot Buddy Davis was both lovely and lethal, cutting through seas like a mountain on the move. On her maiden voyage, Cyrus and his brother Ty landed an incredible haul: a 700-pounder, a 500-pounder, two 150-pounders, two spearfish, and a mahi. In many ways, the Honey was the perfect sportfishing vessel for Kona—compact yet stable, and built for the challenges of offshore fishing.

In 2019, Captain Cyrus took the helm of his current vessel, a stunning 43-foot Cabo aptly named Kraken, after his renowned lure company. The Kraken is a fishing machine that lives up to its name, drawing unwitting fish from the deep daily. Combining the comfort of a Cadillac with the maneuverability of a Ferrari, the Kraken is the ultimate sportfishing platform.

“Passion first, succeed later.” These words embody Captain Cyrus’ journey. Over the past 15 years, his relentless passion and persistence have guided him from humble beginnings with a skiff to captaining several flagship vessels and earning a reputation as a world-class fisherman. From dreamer to world champion, Captain Cyrus continues to inspire anglers on and off the Kona coast.
